It doesn't really matter if you believe in reincarnation or not or even if Laurel Phelan the author is telling us the truth of being Guinevere from the past, it is her journey. She did an amazing job in telling a story that to me felt very likely and plausible. The only thing I questioned was how did she know the dialogue of the other people when she was not present to hear them or even before she met Arthur? My answer is perhaps she had access to the Akashic records when she was under hypnosis. One of my favorite passages is from page 82 when Guinevere's father says,"The ancient ones come from the stars. They came and created our land and seeded it with plants and animals, They made us a part of our earth. we must always honor it and remember we are spirit first." The resonated with me since I believe this myself since I was little. I too have memories and feelings of being in different incarnations and not just here on earth. The show Ancient Aliens even excepts this statement of the human form having been created by another race of beings. Since we are spirit first then that suggest we are part of the planning of creation in form before we come into it. Much of our history has been distorted and many people believe the first thing they read is truth. The truth is all in the Aksahic records so I invite those who wrote harsh reviews of Laurels book to explore outside themselves and to see their own possible incarnations, they may be surprised what they find. I found Guinevere to be a compelling look at a young girl trying to embrace her femininity in a time where men ruled and dominated them. I found her spirit to be strong and she learned many lessons just in that life. One being she was born as she was meant to be. I could relate to her story because when I was little I often felt like I should have been male and felt males had all the power but now know the power of being a woman. Laurel captured the time period as I believed it happened for her. I will share this book after I re read it again and highlight the pages that stood out to me because she clearly captured the emotions of the time in my opinion.

I found this book three years ago when I was a little too young for it. The book was found totally by accident and the only true reason I took it from the shelf was because of Guinevere. I did not know what to expect from this book besides a woman who seeks her past life.
Phelan wove an interesting story. The love, infedelity, war and seduction. I found our protagonist very selfish and munipulative. At times, I almost loathed her yet she was an intriguing character none the less. The delivers a dark and unique tale about Guinevere. The character developpement was weak at times except for Guinevere and her best friend. I would only recommend this book for anyone willing to try a darker image and story of Guinevere.
I've always found it rather amusing that when people claim to have been reincarnated, they almost always identify themselves as someone impressive and/or famous.
Laurel Phelan doesn't disappoint -- according to her, she is the reincarnation of the legendary wife of King Arthur. "Guinevere The True Story of One Woman's Quest for Her Past Life Identity and the Healing of Her Eternal Soul" (whew!) is a book that is one half melodrama, and one half Marion Zimmer Bradley-style feminist fantasy -- and a total mess.
First off, she preachily tells us that we all have to learn about reincarnation so "our planet may evolve to peace" and love and fuzzy bunnies. Plus, since she's a professional regressionist, it would also net her a lot of money.
Then she thankfully gets to the story she was plagued by nightmares and weird sensations of being "two people" -- and after undergoing a past-life regression, she manages to relive the scenarios of the past. Guess what she's Queen Guinevere, a legendary figure that she claims to have hated (though she never explains why). But after several years of vehement denial, she finally starts exploring her past.
And she actually starts at the beginning, with the birth of Gwynnefwar, as well as how she was raised as a warrior by her loving father. Of course she eventually marries Arthur, the duke of Briton, leading to a troubled marriage with religious and social differences between them. And of course, their kingdom goes right down the tubes, with tragic consequences.
"Guinevere" is one of those books that is almost impossible to put down... because it's so hilariously bad. The entire book is basically a fourth-rate historical romance, heavily loaded down with fuzzy goddess-centric neopaganism, modern feminism, spiritual psychobabble and the occasional halfhearted nod to history and/or legend. Even then, she gets it wrong more often than right.
In short, it feels more like a bad knockoff of Marion Zimmer Bradley than an accurate portrayal of how Guinevere's life might have been. Despite the lavish descriptions of Dark Ages life and England's landscapes, Phelan's style is outright painful -- the entire story is slow and lacking in passion, and riddled with ghastly dialogue ("I am your servant, but I will not be used by your wife. That is my truth").
On the other hand, it's funny. Unintentionally so, of course -- Phelan speckles her story with melodrama (Gwynnefwar's tantrum-filled last days and demise) and hilariously overwrought scenes ("Hear me, great goddess, Arianrod. Why could I have not been born a man?"). And though she claims that the story is from her own memories, Phelan frequently lapses into omniscient narrator-speak. She can't seem to make up her mind.
But the most hilarious part is Gwynnefwar herself, who is written as an anachronistic Mary Sue worthy of adolescent fanfiction. She's smugly macho, a great she-warrior who disdains the girly-girls, and a tactical genius who shames all the sad little menfolk. Her all-knowing "psychic" friend Merewyn is apparently there just to emphasize that only pagan women are worth knowing.
Laurel Phelan insists that she refuses to read any Arthurian interpretations but her own, which is a shame. The boring, overwrought "Guinevere" spends too little time exploring how Guinevere might have lived, and too much on how Phelan clearly wishes she had.
